Family holidays should create memories, not unnecessary stress.

Yet if you've ever travelled with children, you'll probably recognise the questions running through your mind before you even leave home.

"Have I packed enough clothes?"

The truth is, travelling with children isn't always perfect.

But it doesn't have to be stressful either.

Our son took his first flight when he was just six months old. Since then, we've travelled together on short-haul and long-haul flights, crossed different time zones and experienced airports, airlines and destinations around the world.

Like every family, we've learnt something from every journey.

Some lessons came from careful planning.

Others came from forgetting something and promising ourselves we'd never forget it again.

Prepare Your Child Before You Prepare the Suitcase

One of the most valuable things you can do doesn't involve packing at all.

Talk to your children.

Explain what the day will look like.

Tell them you'll drive to the airport.

Children understand much more than we often realise.

Many adults see airports as stressful.

Guess where they're flying.

Talk about how airports work.

Those moments often become part of the holiday itself.

Pack Smart Rather Than Heavy

When I first became a parent, I thought travelling meant taking absolutely everything.

Experience quickly taught me otherwise.

Instead of packing more, pack smarter.

Always keep essentials close to you.

Spare clothes.

Medication.

Wet wipes.

Travel documents.

Chargers.

And one thing I never travel without...

Snacks.

Even if meals are included on your flight, children don't always feel like eating unfamiliar food.

A favourite snack can prevent a tired child from becoming an unhappy traveller.

One lesson I've learnt over the years is simple.

It's always better to be slightly overprepared than wishing you'd packed one more snack.

Entertainment Makes the Journey Easier

Children don't need constant entertainment.

But having options makes a huge difference.

Colouring books.

Sticker books.

Small puzzles.

Favourite stories.

Music.

Window watching.

Every child is different.

Long-haul flights have become my son's favourite.

Not because they're longer...

But because many aircraft have individual entertainment screens.

If you ask him today which aircraft he likes most, he'll answer without hesitation.

"The big ones."

Why?

"They have their own TV."

Sometimes it's the little things that make travelling exciting for children.

Yes… Sometimes a Phone Really Is the Best Option

Many of us try to limit screen time at home.

I completely understand that.

But travel days aren't everyday life.

You're often leaving home early, spending hours in airports and asking children to sit still for much longer than they're used to.

Sometimes a favourite film, an educational game or a few cartoons on your phone or tablet can make the journey much easier for everyone.

If you're usually a strict parent when it comes to screens, don't feel guilty about making a small exception while travelling.

Think of it as another travel essential, just like a neck pillow or a colouring book.

Once you're exploring your destination, chances are the phone will quickly be forgotten.

Let Children Feel Part of the Journey

Children love responsibility.

Our son enjoys carrying his own backpack.

Helping us find the departure gate.

Showing his boarding pass.

Saying hello to the cabin crew.

Those little moments build confidence.

Cabin crew are also often wonderful with young travellers.

A smile.

A conversation.

A simple wave.

Sometimes those small gestures become the memories children talk about long after the holiday has finished.

Long-Haul Flights Aren't as Scary as They Sound

One thing parents often tell me is:

"I think we'll wait until they're older before flying long-haul."

Honestly?

Some of our easiest flights have been the longest ones.

There's time to eat.

Time to sleep.

Time to watch films.

Time to colour.

Time to walk around the cabin.

Children often settle into the rhythm surprisingly well.

With a little preparation, long-haul travel can be much easier than many parents imagine.

Every Child Is Different

There isn't one perfect way to travel with children.

Some will sleep through take-off.

Others will spend the whole flight looking out of the window.

Some will make friends before you've even left the gate.

Others will happily colour for hours.

The goal isn't to have the perfect journey.

It's simply to enjoy travelling together.

Children rarely remember whether everything went exactly to plan.

They remember how they felt.
